I hear people say all the time, “Do you what you love” or “Find your passion” when starting a career.
I mean… that’s sweet and all… but… why?
First of all, it seems to put unrealistic expectations on the realities of work.
Let’s be honest, y’all… work can be… work. In every job, every industry, and even the “cushiest” of jobs, you have to put in work at some point.
But, more importantly, it overlooks the source of the most fulfilling part of work…
The people you work with.
You see, I didn’t have this passion and burning desire to do SEO & internet marketing when I grew up.
However, I will tell you something I am passionate about: building something special with a great group people inside a winning culture.
I don’t care what you do, if you don’t like the people you work with, the job is going to suck. Have you ever seen a losing baseball team with a bad culture? The players are being paid millions to play a child’s game and they’re having an absolutely horrible time.
I’m thankful I get to work hard at 🍋 Lemonade Stand with an amazing team and great clients. We’ve worked really, really hard to create a good company culture. That doesn’t mean that the job is perfect every day, though.
Still… When the work gets hard, someone lifts me up. When days get tough, someone has my back. What more could I ask for? We could be breaking bricks and I would enjoy it… because of the people!
So, my advice: Instead of chasing the perfect work, look for a company that you love doing the work in because of the people you get to do it with.
