Bose Headphones pretty much saved my sanity and allowed me to actually function at a high level at work. Let me explain…
I work with a bunch of cool people @Lemonade Stand and @Yalla. Every day is another adventure with my good buddies. We’ve got the right people on the bus, and we feel like we’re on our way to the promised land. But unfortunately for me… our office echoes. We have hardwood floors. Noise travels. Our doors are open. And in some places, it’s an open floor plan. That is a deadly combination when you work with a bunch of people who love to whistle, hum, drum on desks, make random weird noises, sing the chorus to 80’s songs over and over again, play Pandora so that everyone else can hear, talk loud, etc, etc, etc. When I really need to focus on something, these noises can stop me in my tracks.
I think I have some sort of noise anxiety. It’s not that I can’t stand noise. It’s just that I can’t stand certain types of noises. Like… annoying noises. I freaking hate whistling. For some reason, I just hate it. I have been working with one of my best friends, Brian, since we were 13 on some project or another. We’ve worked in the same office or in the office next door to each other for almost our entire adult life. But Brian… is a whistler. He doesn’t even know he’s whistling. And there isn’t even really a tune to go with it. It’s just random chirps of whistling and it’s about as annoying as my dog licking his butt over and over again.
As our startup began to grow, we added a guy named John. Go figure… John is the king of noises. John is always doing a million things at one time… in addition to carrying on with the noise choice of the day. He calls it “multi-tasking.” There’s another guy in an open bull-pen area near my office that also likes to join in by whistling and singing along with the lyrics to Cypress Hill. While he’s singing “insane in the membrane,” I’m going insane in the membrane.
Having said all of this… you’d think I hated my working life. But it’s the contrary. I love it. I wouldn’t have it any other way. I love the fact that they’re just working away and enjoying the day! It’s not their problem. It’s me. I have the problem. I don’t know why some noises bother me but just as every good creator must learn how to do… I had to adapt.
So if you walk in our office, and see me at my desk, you’ll probably find me with a pair of Bose headphones over my ears. Not the little headphones. I needed the big daddy. The ones that go completely around my ear and provide noise canceling. With these Bose headphones, I can literally go into my own world and focus on the things I need to focus on without being annoyed at my good buddies. I’m not some kind of rep for Bose. I don’t get any kind of affiliate commission for saying a few nice things about them. It’s just… these headphones have provided me one of the greatest ROI’s on any investment I’ve made: Peace.
We have so much equipment in our office that helps us become a better startup. Funny that a pair of noise canceling headphones have become such an integral part of my productivity.
